The Philosophy

Winning Innovator of the Year is a significant recognition. What does this award mean to you personally?

"It matters because it validates the obsession, not the ambition. My focus on understanding skin science and incorporating as many principles from regenerative medicine to truly improve how the skin looks – the countless hours perfecting every formula, it’s incredible to see that people really value this."

Innovation gets thrown around a lot in beauty. What does it actually mean to you, and why do you think so few brands are doing it right?

"Innovation takes time, patience and a deep understanding of skin science and organic chemistry. Innovation isn't a new color palette or a rebrand. It's solving something that wasn't solved before. This is what drives me to keep innovating. I won't rush any formula — that's just not how I work. Only when each formula is truly perfected, with advancements in ingredients, delivery technologies – whatever the focus is for that specific product – do I say it's ready to launch."

You've said before that you formulate for real skin, not ideal skin. What does that philosophy look like in practice?

"Real skin is NOT perfect or ideal all the time. I understand personally what it is like to struggle with skin issues and how deeply it can affect you emotionally and psychologically. I formulate to address very specific skin issues that most people have at some point – and I want to make sure in doing so that I am also helping them have healthier skin overall, that is more resilient and with better barrier function – achieving this helps addressing specific skin issues so much easier and faster. When your skin looks better, you feel better about yourself and that aspect is super important to me."

You're known for high-concentration formulas. Where does the industry typically compromise, and why do you refuse to?

"I'm focused on making the absolute best skincare products possible — not on the cost of goods or margins. Supercharging to me is an obsession – you cannot achieve the results that Allies products achieve by formulating in the traditional way."

There's a real tension in beauty between speed-to-market and getting it right. How do you navigate that, and has it ever cost you commercially?

"Yes, it has cost us. Launches delayed, trends missed. I'd make the same call every time."

When you look at a finished product, what's the difference between something you're proud of and something you consider truly innovative?

"I know a formula is truly innovative when I can't find a reference point for it. I’m not looking to mimic other products or follow trends. I’m forging a new path."

What do you want someone to feel the first time they use one of your products?

"Seen. Like someone finally made something with them in mind."

What's the one thing you wish more people understood about what it takes to truly innovate in skincare?

"The one thing I wish people understood is that you really have to be willing to fail. Sometimes your testing group of 10, 20, 30 people isn't big enough — and when you launch at scale, the feedback tells you something they didn't. But failure provides the insights and the answers to the path you need to take to elevate a formulation. A failed formulation doesn't mean you're bad at your job. It means you have to try harder, and your sample size needs to be bigger. You don't get to perfection without failing first. That's the one thing I've learned."

Your personal journey is something that has deeply connected with the Allies of Skin community. As the brand has grown and evolved, do the same motivations still drive you — or has that journey of healing revealed new ones you didn't expect?

"I started this for my skin. I keep going for everyone who recognizes themselves in that story. I’ve met so many amazing people with their own skin journeys, like through our In My Healing Era movement and partnership with Face Forward International. I see the impact we can have and the healing we can bring. That represents not just the pull of motivation for me, but the push energy behind me to propel me forward."

The Science

Peptides, growth factors, copper tripeptides — these aren't new ingredients, but your approach to them clearly is. What does Allies of Skin do differently at the formulation level?

"I study every single active ingredient, understand its mechanism of action, how it interacts with other ingredients, how it feels on the skin, what type of base it should be formulated in, and what percentages of each active will give the best results – I don't use any ingredients at 'fairy dust' levels just to get a marketing claim, which is pretty common in the industry. My approach is incredibly rigorous — the end result is products that simply wouldn't exist if I took any shortcuts."

Walk us through the multi peptides & GF advanced lifting serum. What was the insight that led to that formula, and what problem were you actually solving?

"The insight really came when I was dealing with my facial infections and necrosis — sitting in a plastic surgeon's office, learning about growth factors and regenerative science. I was so impressed with how they worked in-office that I thought: is there a way to bottle that technology up into something people could use every single day? Not everyone has access to a dermatologist on a regular basis. If you look at lasers, chemical peels — a lot of it comes down to triggering collagen production. I just thought: why not bottle that up."

Copper tripeptide has a fascinating history in skincare. Why did you want to revisit it, and what did it take to unlock its full potential in your formula?

"This ingredient had been around for decades. Nobody had pushed it hard enough, except for me. I kept revisiting, improving, testing, trialing to push this ingredient forward — I genuinely believe it's one of the most extraordinary actives available, and I wanted to finally do it justice."

Your peptide and antioxidant firming treatment sits in an interesting space — daily use but serious results. How do you balance wearability with clinical-grade efficacy?

"People expect clinical results to feel like a treatment. I wanted it to feel like skincare. I proved with this formula that you can achieve clinical level results with a super luxurious and incredibly aesthetic feel. It’s quite the opposite of a clinical treatment – which typically cause irritation, down time and healing before you can see the results – this formula does the opposite but still delivers the results that people want."

Some of your formulas took years to develop. Can you take us inside one of those journeys — the dead ends, the breakthroughs, what it felt like when it finally clicked?

"The one I'm really proud of is the Tranexamic and Arbutin Advanced Brightening Serum. I first worked on this formulation during COVID — I was taking a lot of adaptogens, fascinated by how mushrooms work. What I didn't know was that mushrooms are naturally darker in color, and over time in the formulation they'd turn even darker. The original formula just turned really dark, really quickly — not very pleasant to use. It took me about a year and a half to reformulate it from the very beginning. I had to strip out the kombucha, the licorice fruit, the mushrooms, the vitamin E — and start again. That's when I found an incredible active called Diacetyl Boldine, a powerful brightener, and it became an even more supercharged formula. The end result: something that truly brightens without exfoliating, and doesn't feel like you're putting a dark cough syrup on your face."

The Process & Future

What's the most counterintuitive thing you've learned about how skin actually works — something that changed the way you formulate?

"That if you aren’t getting dry, red, irritated the product isn’t doing anything. More irritation does not mean better results – this is so old fashioned, it’s how people used to think when the only ingredients available that really worked were prescription retinoids, which can totally wreck your skin barrier function, cause redness, dryness, stinging and burning."

Winning this award feels like a milestone, but you seem more focused on what's next. What's exciting you most about where skincare innovation is heading?

"Innovation for me is about bioavailability, novel delivery systems and unlocking the skin’s ability to produce healthier cells with more energy for longer. It’s pretty incredible where we are heading."

If you could solve one remaining problem in skincare that no one has cracked yet, what would it be?

"For me, it would be helping people improve the appearance of scars. Everyone has scars — acne scars, C-section scars, surgical scars, badly done professional treatments. Topical products have real limitations there, but it's something I spend a lot of time obsessing over. We work with a lot of survivors, and I'm always thinking about how we help their skin grafts, their third degree burns, their surgical scars look better. That has a huge impact on someone's confidence. That's what I would like to fix."

Who is the Allies of Skin customer in your mind — and how does that vision shape every formulation decision?

"Someone who's done the research, tried the products, and still felt let down. I make things for them."

If someone is completely new to Allies of Skin and reading this right now, where would you tell them to start?

"It really depends on your skin concerns and goals — and that's exactly what the Founder's Guide was built for. The team at Allies created it to help find the right routine by skin concern. If you're looking for one product to start with, find your concern in the tool and see which serum is the best fit. I'd recommend starting there."

Without giving too much away — what can you tell us about what's coming next from Allies of Skin?

"I'll say this: I’ve never been more excited for the innovation we have coming. We’re breaking with convention again."
